Are You NCLEX Ready?

Before you begin, take an honest inventory. This isn't a test — it's a mirror. Read each statement and check the ones you can say "yes" to right now. The unchecked boxes aren't failures; they're simply your map for where to focus next.

☐ I can recognize priority assessment findings.

☐ I can interpret common laboratory results.

☐ I understand delegation and scope of practice.

☐ I can prioritize patients using ABCs and Maslow.

☐ I can identify safety risks.

☐ I can interpret NGN case studies.

☐ I can explain my rationale for choosing an answer.

If you checked most of these — you're ready to practice. The simulator will sharpen what's already there.

If a few are still unchecked — good. You just found exactly where to spend your energy. Note them, run the simulator anyway, and let your performance report confirm where to review. Readiness isn't a perfect score on this list; it's knowing where you stand and having a plan.

Before You Start the Simulator

Consider this your last-minute coaching — the quick word before you step onto the floor. Keep these six habits close while you test:

Read the entire question before you look at the answers. The stem holds the clues. Rushing to the options is the fastest way to answer a question that wasn't asked.

Don't add information that isn't there. Answer the client in front of you, not the "what if" you're imagining. If the question doesn't say it, it isn't happening.

Focus on patient safety. When you're unsure, ask: which choice keeps this patient safest? Safety is almost always the direction of the right answer.

Look for priority words — first, best, initial, immediate, priority. They tell you that several answers may be correct, but only one comes first.

Trust your clinical reasoning. You've practiced this thinking for months. Your first well-reasoned instinct is usually sound.

Think like a nurse, not a test taker. Don't hunt for tricks. Picture the patient, picture the unit, and ask what you would actually do at the bedside.

Common NCLEX Mistakes

These are the slips that trip up well-prepared students — not knowledge gaps, but habits. Knowing them is half of avoiding them.

Reading too quickly and missing a key detail in the stem.

Changing answers without a good reason. If your first choice was well-reasoned, leave it. Change only when you spot a fact you genuinely misread.

Ignoring abnormal assessment findings. The abnormal value in the stem is usually there for a reason — don't step past it.

Choosing an intervention before assessing when assessment is the appropriate first step. (And the reverse: assessing when the patient is already crashing and needs action.)

Missing key words such as first, priority, best, or except. One overlooked word can flip the entire question.

Final NCLEX Success Tips

Take your time. You have up to five hours. There is no prize for finishing fast — only for answering well. One question at a time.

Eliminate clearly incorrect answers first. Even removing two options turns a guess into a strong decision.

Focus on what keeps the patient safest. When two answers both seem reasonable, safety breaks the tie.

Remember your frameworks. When a question feels overwhelming, fall back on the structures you've drilled:

ABCs — Airway, Breathing, Circulation come first.
Maslow — physiologic needs before psychosocial.
Nursing Process — assess before you act (unless the patient is unstable).
Stable vs. unstable — the unstable patient is seen first.
Acute vs. chronic — a new, acute change outranks a stable chronic condition.

These frameworks are your compass. When you don't know the way, they point you toward the answer.

You have spent countless hours learning the science of nursing — the long nights, the care plans, the concepts that finally clicked. Now it's time to trust the knowledge and clinical judgment you've built.

Every question is an opportunity to think critically, protect patient safety, and apply the nursing process. You don't have to be perfect. You have to be thoughtful, one scenario at a time.

Approach each question calmly, stay present, and remember what all of this is really for: you are preparing to care for real people, on real days that matter to them — not simply to pass an exam. The exam is just the doorway. The nurse walking through it is you.

Complete another focused practice exam. Test the area again with fresh questions.
